Do You Know Where You're Going?

Opening - One Sentence, One Question (ஒரு வாக்கியம், ஒரு கேள்வி)

John 8 contains a single sentence of Jesus that holds up before us the deepest question a human being must ever answer. The sentence is His. The question is ours.

"Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going." - John 8:14 (NKJV)

Jesus is speaking about Himself - His origin, His destination - and tells the religious crowd they do not know His. But sit under that sentence long enough and the mirror turns: the reason they could not grasp where He was going was because they had no settled knowing of where they were going either.

And so the question His sentence raises - the question every one of us must answer - is this: do you know where you are going? Jesus could answer it. The goal of this morning's text is that we should be able to walk away from it able to say it with Him.

When the pastor put this question to the congregation, almost half raised their hands to say they did not have an answer. That is precisely why we must linger here. If we walk out of this text not knowing where we are going, then every wind that blows over our lives will toss us - a job here, a problem there, a crisis somewhere else, and we run in whichever direction the wind is loudest. But if we know where we are going, we walk in the right direction, on the right road, with steady feet.

The Greek anchor: οἶδα (கிரேக்க வார்த்தை: oida)

The verb Jesus uses is οἶδα - oida - perfect tense: "I have come to know, and I know it still." It is not the casual word "I am aware." It is settled fact, lived inside. Not opinion. Not feeling. Not religious mood. It is unshakeable knowing - knowledge that does not move when the storm hits. I know. What I know is true. There is no change in it.

That is the posture of Christ. And that is the posture He offers - not maybe, not someday, but a settled knowing of where you are going.

Narrative - What Is Happening in John 8 (யோவான் 8-ல் என்ன நடக்கிறது)

Jesus has just walked into the temple courts. Earlier in the chapter (8:12) He has declared, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."

The Pharisees challenge Him: "You testify about Yourself; Your witness is not valid." Their objection is rooted in Jewish law - no single person's testimony stood alone. A matter had to be established by two or three witnesses; one man speaking on his own behalf could not be accepted as a witness.

Jesus' calm answer: Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true - because I alone know both ends of the road I am walking. I know where I came from. I know where I am going. You do not - and that is why you cannot judge.

He is not boasting. He is naming a fact. Only Jesus can trace His origin all the way back before time, and His destination all the way past the cross to the Father's right hand. No prophet. No philosopher. No apostle. Only the Son. And He hands that certainty to anyone who follows Him.

1. Jesus Knows Where He's Going. He Offers the Same Certainty to You. (இயேசு எங்கே போகிறார் என்று அறிவார். அதே நிச்சயத்தை அவர் உமக்கும் கொடுக்கிறார்.)

Two questions you must answer this week: Where did you come from? Where are you going? Without these answers, every wind of life will move you.

Jesus could answer both. He came from the Father; He was going to the Father - the steady line through His whole ministry. In John 14 He extends the same certainty to His disciples: I go to prepare a place for you - not for the worthy or the strong, but for those who follow Him. The "many mansions" of the Father's house are not a vague spiritual symbol. Paul says it just as plainly: we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. That is where we are going. That is where Jesus has already gone, to prepare the place.

A New Testament certainty the Old Testament saints did not have

Look closely at the contrast. In the Old Testament, even the saints lived without this full assurance of a heavenly home. Job and David both, in many places, say that a man can praise the LORD only while he is alive - once he dies, there is no praise from him. The hope of life beyond death was a shadow, not a settled, named destination.

But then Jesus Christ gave His life. By His blood He redeemed everyone in this world, established for us an eternal dwelling, and reconciled both the Old Testament saints and the New Testament saints to God, giving us eternal life. That is why we could read in Psalm 16 this morning: "You will show me the path of life." Jesus is the One who shows us the path of life. Unlike Abraham, who set out not knowing where he was going, we sit at the Lord's feet and learn: I know where I came from. I know where I am going.

But knowing it and feeling it are not the same thing. Sometimes we say the words without weight: I came from the Lord. I will go to the Lord. Do we actually carry it? When the question is asked plainly - do you believe you are going to the Lord, to eternal life? - the older saints in the room raise their hands quickly. They have been waiting. The younger ones hesitate, because they still have a long list of things they want to do before they go. But that hesitation is itself a warning. Many here cannot say oida about their destination - religious without being settled, coming to church without coming to Christ. You must not stay there. Salvation is the moment Jesus tells you the answer - "you came from Me, you are going to be with Me" - and you receive it.

The Abraham contrast

"By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going." - Hebrews 11:8 (NKJV)

In this morning's Old Testament reading, Abram went out not knowing where he was going. Faith without oida is real - Abraham honoured God, pleased God, and obeyed without a map - but the oida Jesus offers is fuller. He does not ask you to walk blind. He walks before you and offers His own settled knowing as a gift.

Guardrail: Oida is not boasting. It is the quiet confidence of a child who knows his father's house. No one here is too poor, too sinful, too late, or too educated to receive it.

2. God Moves Through Generations, Not Headlines (தேவன் தலைப்புச் செய்திகளில் நகர்வதில்லை - தலைமுறைகளில் நகர்கிறார்)

You want results this week. God's kingdom does not move that way.

How long, on average, does it take for God's promises to be fulfilled? Some are answered the moment He speaks them. But many - most - take far longer than a single lifetime.

From Genesis 3 to the Bethlehem manger - roughly four thousand years. In Genesis 3, God promises a Seed of the woman who would crush the serpent's head. Every prophet who came after kept announcing Him. But the promise was true, and the promise was fulfilled - four thousand years later. Adam, who first heard it, never saw it with his eyes. Most of God's people died waiting (Heb 11:13); they held the promise without seeing the Person.

Israel in Egypt - four hundred years of slavery (Gen 15:13). The first generation entered Egypt with great honour, only seventy strong, under Joseph's protection. They were given the best land. They were welcomed. Then, slowly, a Pharaoh arose who did not know Joseph, and the suffering began. The first man to feel the lash never lived to see Moses. The grandson, or great-grandson, of that first sufferer was the one who finally cried out - and God heard. By the time Moses came, every one of the first generation was dead. And when Moses led the people out through the wilderness, of all those who left Egypt only two - Joshua and Caleb - ever set foot in Canaan. Most who saw Moses never crossed.

Was God's word wrong? Not at all. He had said, I will bring Israel into the land of Canaan - and He did. The promise held. The corporate body was delivered, generation by generation. God's vision is not the lifespan of one man. God's vision is generational.

Your part is small - and that is liberating

Your part is small. Your years feel long to you, but on God's ledger they are a faithful sentence in a chapter He is still writing. Not discouraging - liberating. You don't have to finish the work. You have to be faithful in your window.

This re-orders everything. Most people leave God's house because they expected immediate results and didn't get them. The mortgage didn't disappear this week. The illness didn't lift this week. The wayward son didn't come home this week. The business didn't turn around this week. And so they conclude God is silent. I've been praying. I've been fasting. Nothing has changed in my life. Why bother?

Do not measure God by your timetable. He keeps covenant for a thousand generations (Deut 7:9). The slow ones to leave are the ones who saw it.

This is why even our concern for our own children is so often small. A brother the pastor spoke with the night before - an architect, recently graduated, who in his very first month after college earned ₹60,000 and gave ₹26,000 of it to a friend in need - said something piercing. "My parents gave us the greatest gift: education. The AC in our house was installed only now, after my brother and sister and I were all settled. They refused everything for themselves so that we could study. I don't know if I could sacrifice that much for my own children." That is generational thinking. That is a parent who lived a small, faithful sentence so the next chapter could be written.

How many of us live like that? How many parents shape every choice - the words we speak, the relationships we keep, the habits we entertain, the lies we tell - by asking, what will this do to my children, and to their children? "Truthful" is a small word until you ask how many lies you told yesterday. The sins we treat as private leak into the next generation. The good we do becomes their inheritance. The wrong we do becomes their inheritance too. This is not just about your own children - it includes everyone they will live alongside.

Our vision is so narrow. We ask, what can I do today? what can I make of my life? But the saints of Hebrews 11 all died in faith, not having received the promises - and the text adds that God had foreseen something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us (Heb 11:40). They waited for us. God waited generations to bring you in. Will you not wait one lifetime for those who come after?

You are not here so that you can live eighty years and then be done. The psalmist says man's days are seventy years, or by strength eighty - but God did not put you on the earth merely for those eighty. He has placed you for the sake of generations. Every good thing you do feeds those who will come after you. Every wrong thing you do wounds them. Understand this, and your priorities will change.

3. The Road Runs Through Gethsemane - and He Walks It With You (சாலை கெத்செமனே வழியாகவே செல்கிறது - அவரோ உம்முடனே நடக்கிறார்)

"If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me." - Luke 9:23 (NKJV)

The road from where you are to where you are going is not paved.

Deuteronomy 20: God excused four men from war - the man who built a new house, the man who planted a new vineyard, the man newly betrothed, and the man who was afraid. Why? Because some who went would not come back. God does not pretend the field is safe. He is honest about the cost. The unprepared go home; the rest go out knowing the price.

Jesus names this same cost when He says take up your cross daily. The cross was not a metaphor in His day - it was public, prolonged, undignified death. Discipleship is not a side cost - the cross IS the road.

What looks like foolishness to the world

The road God calls you to will often look like foolishness to the world. A businessman the pastor knows in Tirunelveli was lamenting how lucrative certain trades are - a single egg-omelette stall inside a new bar pays ₹10,000 a day in rent alone; the liquor trade is enormously profitable; even a bidi factory, by one person's testimony, returns ten rupees for every one invested. If I gave you fifty lakhs today to start such a business, the pastor asked, would you take it? No hands went up. And if I gave you fifty lakhs to start a textile shop? Many hands went up.

Why the difference? Because we know, instinctively, that not every opportunity is God's will. A path can be open, profitable, possible - and still not the road He has set before us. I will not do something just because I am capable of doing it. I will do it because it is His will.

The pastor's own story illustrates the point. Carrying a debt close to fifty lakhs, his friend in Singapore secured him a job at ₹1 lakh a month - enough, in time, to clear everything. He prayed, and said no. Everyone called him a fool. Pages and pages were written to me. Verse after verse was preached at me. A year later, no improvement. The friend tried again, this time with a ₹2 lakh offer. He prayed, and said no again. Everyone was angry. "He'll never change. There's no talking to this man." But the Lord's will was not Singapore. The Lord had work for him here - work that has touched many lives. And in the meantime God has given more than he ever asked or imagined: a faithful spouse, a healing from bipolar disorder that doctors said would require medication for life, a ministry that has been useful to many. Not so that I could clear my debts. Not so that I could buy a good car or sit in an air-conditioned house. But so that many would be served.

When you walk the path God has set, the world will think you are mad. That is not a sign you are off the road. It is often a sign you are on it.

The deepest comfort

Jesus walked this road first. He knew where He was going - and the road there was Gethsemane. The sleeping disciples. The olive press of blood. The betraying kiss. The silent court. The lashes. The thorns. The nails. Obedience past the point any of us would have stopped. He knew. The knowing made the going possible (Heb 12:2 - for the joy set before Him He endured the cross).

What is the prayer of a true disciple on that road? "Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." Have you ever prayed that prayer? The day you pray it honestly is the day you begin to walk the same road He walked. The pastor's testimony: I have prayed it. At least twice. Once, lying flat in the back of a lorry as everything we owned was loaded onto it, leaving Chennai with bipolar disorder and fifty lakhs of debt, looking up at the sky, completely empty. I prayed exactly that prayer. "Lord, I cannot do this. But I will not run from it. Your will, not mine." And from that day until now, He has honoured that word.

The peace and joy He has given since then are not the absence of suffering. The sufferings are still real. But peace and joy and usefulness - He has poured these out.

What He offers when He says follow Me: not a smoother road than His, but the same road with His company on it. You will not walk it alone - the Author of your faith is also its Finisher; He will not abandon halfway.

To know where you are going is the deepest peace a human being can have.

Jesus had it. He hands it to anyone who will follow Him.

The road is long. The road is costly. The road runs through Gethsemane.

But the road has a destination - and Christ is already standing at the end, holding out His hand. He has walked every step of this road ahead of us. He is not waiting to see if we will make it; He is waiting to receive us.

Every morning this week, before your day begins, say aloud where you came from and where you are going. Two sentences. "I came from God. I am going to be with Him through Jesus Christ." Speak it slowly. Mean it.
