The King Who Knelt

Opening: What Happened on This Night (இந்த இரவில் என்ன நடந்தது)

Close your eyes for a moment. Picture a small, dimly lit room. Thirteen men around a table. The meal is over. And then the most powerful man in that room — the One who calmed storms, raised the dead, fed thousands — stands up. He takes off His outer robe. He picks up a towel. He wraps it around His waist. He kneels on the dusty floor. And He begins to wash the dirty, mud-caked feet of His friends.

This is Maundy Thursday — the night before Jesus went to the cross. That night, He shared a final meal with His disciples (Luke 22:14-20), gave them the bread and the cup (Matthew 26:26-28), prayed in agony in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46), and surrendered to the Father's will (Luke 22:42). One night. The full picture of what leadership looks like in God's kingdom.

இதுதான் மவுண்டி வியாழன் — இயேசு சிலுவைக்குப் போன முந்தின இரவு. அன்றிரவு, அவர் தம் சீடர்களுடன் கடைசி பந்தியைப் பகிர்ந்தார் (லூக்கா 22:14-20), அப்பத்தையும் பாத்திரத்தையும் கொடுத்தார் (மத்தேயு 26:26-28), கெத்சமனேயில் வேதனையோடு ஜெபித்தார் (மத்தேயு 26:36-46), பிதாவின் சித்தத்திற்கு கீழ்ப்படிந்தார் (லூக்கா 22:42). ஒரே இரவு. தேவனுடைய ராஜ்யத்தில் தலைமைத்துவம் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்பதன் முழுச் சித்திரம்.

The Foot Washing: Leadership Redefined (பாதம் கழுவுதல்: தலைமைத்துவம் மறுவரையறை)

Jesus had everything a leader could have:

இயேசுவிடம் ஒரு தலைவனுக்கு தேவையான எல்லாமே இருந்தது:

• Authority (அதிகாரம்) — Matthew 28:18, demons fled
• Power (வல்லமை) — Mark 4:39, John 11:43-44, wind and sea obeyed, sickness healed
• Ownership (உரிமை) — Mark 3:13-14
• Responsibility (பொறுப்பு) — John 3:16-17, salvation

And He knelt down and washed feet. / அவர் முழங்காலிட்டு பாதங்களைக் கழுவினார்.

Not because He had nothing better to do. Not because it was His role. But because it needed doing, and He wasn't above doing it.

செய்ய வேறு வேலை இல்லாததால் அல்ல. அது அவருடைய பணி என்பதால் அல்ல. ஆனால் அது செய்ய வேண்டியிருந்தது, அவர் அதற்கு மேலானவர் அல்ல.

Servant Leadership is Not Just Menial Work (சேவை தலைமைத்துவம் என்பது வெறும் சிறிய வேலை அல்ல)

Jesus didn't spend three years just washing feet. He preached, He taught, He led, He rebuked, He made hard decisions, He cast out evil. He did His primary job with full authority. But He never once looked at a task and said, "That's beneath me." If it served people, He did it. The miracle and the menial — both came from the same heart.

Three Circles of Application (மூன்று வட்டங்கள்)

1. In the Church (சபையில்)

Picture this: an elder who stays back after service to stack the chairs. A worship leader who sits with a struggling teenager after practice instead of rushing home. That's servant leadership in the church. The title doesn't shrink the job description — it expands it.

நினைத்துப் பாருங்கள்: ஆராதனை முடிந்த பின் நாற்காலிகளை அடுக்கி வைக்கத் தங்கும் ஒரு மூப்பர். பிராக்டீசுக்குப் பிறகு வீட்டுக்கு ஓடாமல் கஷ்டப்படும் ஒரு வாலிபனுடன் அமர்ந்து பேசும் ஆராதனை தலைவர். அதுதான் சபையில் சேவை தலைமைத்துவம். பட்டம் வேலையை சுருக்குவதில்லை — விரிவுபடுத்துகிறது.

"Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock." — 1 Peter 5:2-3 (NKJV)

2. In the Family (குடும்பத்தில்)

Think of a father who cooks when his wife is sick. A mother who sits with her child at midnight helping with homework instead of scolding. A husband who washes the vessels without being asked. That's what it looks like when leadership kneels.

மனைவி வியாதியாக இருக்கும்போது சமைக்கும் ஒரு தகப்பனை நினைத்துப் பாருங்கள். நள்ளிரவு தன் குழந்தையுடன் கடிந்துகொள்ளாமல் வீட்டுப்பாடத்திற்கு உதவி செய்ய அமர்ந்திருக்கும் ஒரு தாய். யாரும் சொல்லாமல் பாத்திரங்களை துலக்கும் ஒரு கணவன். தலைமைத்துவம் முழங்காலிடும்போது அது இப்படித்தான் தெரியும்.

3. In Individual Life (தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்வில்)

A student who helps a classmate understand a lesson instead of mocking them. A worker who patiently trains the new person instead of ignoring them. A neighbour who brings food when someone is grieving without waiting to be asked. These are people who lead like Jesus — quietly, without a title.

ஒரு மாணவனை கேலி செய்யாமல் பாடத்தைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள உதவும் ஒரு மாணவன். புதியவரை பொறுமையாக பயிற்சிக்கும் ஒரு தொழிலாளி. யாராவது கேட்காமல் துக்கத்தில் இருக்கும் ஒருவருக்கு உணவு கொண்டு வரும் ஒரு அக்கம்பக்கத்தார். இவர்கள் இயேசுவைப் போல வழிநடத்துபவர்கள் — அமைதியாக, பட்டம் இல்லாமல்.

"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." — Philippians 2:3-4 (NKJV)

The Garden: Leadership Costs (தோட்டம்: தலைமைத்துவத்தின் விலை)

After washing feet, Jesus went to Gethsemane. He was in such agony that His sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground. He asked the Father to take the cup away.

பாதங்களைக் கழுவிய பின், இயேசு கெத்சமனேக்குச் சென்றார். மிகவும் வியாகுலப்பட்டு, அவருடைய வேர்வை இரத்தத்தின் பெருந்துளிகளாய்த் தரையிலே விழுந்தது. பிதாவிடம் பாத்திரத்தை எடுத்துவிடும்படி கேட்டார்.

This is the part no one signs up for. Servant leadership is not just humility — it's costly obedience. Jesus didn't want the cross. But He said:

இதற்கு யாரும் தன்னை ஒப்புக்கொடுப்பதில்லை. சேவை தலைமைத்துவம் வெறும் தாழ்மை அல்ல — அது விலை கொடுக்கும் கீழ்ப்படிதல். இயேசு சிலுவையை விரும்பவில்லை. ஆனால் அவர் சொன்னார்:

"Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done." — Luke 22:42 (NKJV)

If you lead — in church, in family, in life — there will be a Gethsemane moment. A moment where doing the right thing costs you everything. Where no one sees, no one thanks you, and you want to walk away.

நீங்கள் வழிநடத்தினால் — சபையில், குடும்பத்தில், வாழ்வில் — ஒரு கெத்சமனே தருணம் வரும். சரியானதைச் செய்வது எல்லாவற்றையும் இழக்க வைக்கும் தருணம். யாரும் பார்க்காத, யாரும் நன்றி சொல்லாத, நீங்கள் விலகிச் செல்ல நினைக்கும் தருணம்.

Leadership is staying in that garden. Leadership is saying, "Not my will, but Yours."

தலைமைத்துவம் என்பது அந்தத் தோட்டத்தில் நிற்பது. "என் சித்தமல்ல, உம் சித்தமே" என்று சொல்வது.

The Table (பந்தி)

And then Jesus gave us the communion. Broken bread — His body. Poured cup — His blood. The ultimate act of servant leadership: giving His own life.

பின்பு இயேசு நமக்கு திருவிருந்தைக் கொடுத்தார். பிட்கப்பட்ட அப்பம் — அவருடைய சரீரம். ஊற்றப்பட்ட பாத்திரம் — அவருடைய இரத்தம். சேவை தலைமைத்துவத்தின் உச்ச செயல்: தன் சொந்த ஜீவனைக் கொடுப்பது.

"For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, 'Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.' For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes." — 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NKJV)

Tonight, as we come to this table, we remember:

The King of Kings knelt. The Lord of Lords served. The Son of God surrendered.

That's the kind of leader He calls each of us to be.
