If you're reading this, you probably already know the weight of debt — the sleepless nights, the fear when the phone rings, the shame of hiding what you owe from people you love. Maybe you've borrowed from a moneylender to pay off another moneylender, and the hole keeps getting deeper.

You are not a bad person for being in debt. Many families in our communities are trapped in cycles of borrowing that go back generations. It's a system designed to keep people enslaved — and recognising that is the first step to breaking free.

The shame stops here

One of the cruelest things about debt is the silence. You can't tell your neighbours. You can't tell your family. You carry it alone, and it eats you alive. But shame thrives in secrecy. The moment you tell one trusted person, the weight begins to shift.

You don't need to announce it to the world. Just one person — a pastor, a family elder, a friend who won't judge you. Let someone in.

Practical steps you can take

  • Stop borrowing to pay off borrowing. It feels like a solution, but it's quicksand. Every new loan makes the trap deeper.
  • Know your rights. Bonded labour is illegal in India under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976. No one has the right to make you or your family work as slaves to clear a debt. If you are being forced into bonded labour, contact the District Collector's office or call the National Human Rights Commission helpline at 14433.
  • Talk to someone who can help. Legal aid services are available free of charge at the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Tenkasi. You have the right to free legal counsel.
  • Make a simple plan. List everything you owe, to whom, and at what interest. Seeing it written down is frightening, but it takes the monster out of the shadows.
  • Don't make decisions out of panic. Don't sell land, don't pledge jewellery, don't sign anything without understanding it first.

God does not want you in bondage

"The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit." — Psalm 34:17-18 (NKJV)

The Bible is honest about the reality of debt:

"The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender." — Proverbs 22:7 (NKJV)

God acknowledges your reality. And He offers something the moneylender never will — freedom without conditions:

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." — Matthew 11:28-29 (NKJV)
