I lost my job — what do I do now?

The moment it happens, the ground disappears. Whether you were laid off, let go, or the business closed — the result is the same: uncertainty, fear, and a strange kind of shame that you know isn't fair but can't shake.

Let's start here: losing a job is not a reflection of your worth. Companies restructure. Markets shift. Contracts end. Good, hardworking people lose jobs every day, and it says nothing about who you are.

The first week: breathe and assess

  • Allow yourself a few days to process. The shock is real. You don't need to send out fifty resumes on day one.
  • Review your finances. What do you have in savings? What are your essential expenses? Where can you cut temporarily?
  • Understand your entitlements. Check for severance, pending salary, provident fund, gratuity, and insurance continuation.
  • File for any government benefits you may be eligible for.
  • Update your resume and LinkedIn. Do this while the details of your recent work are fresh.

Weeks two through four: take action

  • Tell people you're looking. Pride keeps people quiet, but most jobs come through personal connections. Let your church community, friends, and former colleagues know.
  • Set a daily routine. Job-searching without structure leads to despair. Wake up at a set time, dedicate specific hours to applications, and build in breaks.
  • Upskill where you can. Free online courses, certifications, and workshops can fill gaps and show initiative.
  • Consider temporary or freelance work. It keeps income flowing, builds connections, and prevents resume gaps.
  • Don't compare yourself to others. Social media will show you everyone's highlight reel. Stay focused on your own path.

For your heart

"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" — Matthew 6:25-26 (NKJV)

This isn't about being passive. It's about not letting worry devour you while you do what you can.

"And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:19 (NKJV)

"Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established." — Proverbs 16:3 (NKJV)
