How do I stop feeling afraid and anxious all the time?

எப்போதும் பயமாகவும் கவலையாகவும் இருப்பதை நான் எப்படி நிறுத்துவது?

Your heart races for no reason. You can't sleep because your mind won't stop spinning. You worry about things that haven't happened yet — and you know it's irrational, but knowing that doesn't make it stop.

Anxiety is not a lack of faith. It is not weakness. It is your nervous system stuck in alarm mode, and it is one of the most common struggles people face. You are not going crazy. You are not alone.

Understanding what's happening

Anxiety is both physical and emotional. Your body releases stress hormones — adrenaline, cortisol — that prepare you to fight or run. When those hormones fire too often or don't switch off, you live in a constant state of dread. This can be triggered by financial pressure, health problems, family conflict, past trauma, or sometimes nothing identifiable at all.

It is a medical condition, and there is no shame in seeking help for it — just as you would for diabetes or a fever.

What helps right now

  • Breathe slowly. Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6. Do this five times. It signals your nervous system to calm down.
  • Name what you're feeling. Say it out loud: "I am feeling anxious." This simple act engages the rational part of your brain.
  • Move your body. Walk for 15 minutes. Anxiety stores itself in the body, and movement releases it.
  • Limit news and social media. Constant bad news feeds anxiety. Give yourself permission to switch off.
  • Talk to someone. A friend, a family member, a counsellor. Don't carry this silently.
  • Establish a routine. Predictability calms an anxious mind. Regular sleep, meals, and prayer times create anchors.
  • Seek professional help. If anxiety is interfering with your daily life, see a doctor. Medication and counselling are not signs of failure — they are tools for healing.
