Introduction (அறிமுகம்)

What qualifies you to do good work? The Word of God:

  • Shows you what sin is in your life (conviction)
  • Corrects you and reconciles you with God (correction)
  • Helps you live a life with integrity and moral courage, doing God's will (training in righteousness)

The result? You become complete and proficient, thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Let us first look at what the Word of God is before we look at what God expects from us.

Part 1: What the Word of God Does (Hebrews 4:12-13)

"For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account." — Hebrews 4:12-13 (NKJV)

At first glance, this sounds almost inspirational. But look more closely:

  • The Word of God is living -- it is not locked in the past.
  • The Word of God is powerful -- it is not passive or optional.
  • The Word of God is sharp -- it cuts, not comforts first.
  • The Word of God divides -- it separates soul and spirit.
  • The Word of God discerns -- it judges thoughts and intentions.
  • Nothing is hidden -- we must give an account.

If this verse stands alone, it sounds like information. But Scripture did not put this verse here accidentally.

The Word "For" -- This Is a Warning, Not Information ("ஏனெனில்" -- இது எச்சரிக்கை, தகவல் அல்ல)

Notice the first word: "For the word of God is living and powerful..." The word "for" means "because." It gives a reason, not a new topic. Verse 12 is explaining why something before it was said.

The Word of God is being described here because God is warning us about something.

Part 2: Diligence vs Disobedience (Hebrews 4:11) (ஜாக்கிரதை எதிர் கீழ்ப்படியாமை)

"Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience." — Hebrews 4:11 (NKJV)

"Therefore" means this verse is a conclusion. Diligence is required. Falling is possible. The danger is disobedience, not lack of knowledge.

God is saying: Be diligent -- because My Word will examine your heart. Be careful -- because My Word will expose disobedience.

The Word of God does not fail people; people fail to respond to the Word.

Part 3: The Promised Rest (Hebrews 4:10) (வாக்குப்பண்ணப்பட்ட இளைப்பாறுதல்)

"For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His." — Hebrews 4:10 (NKJV)

God's rest is real. God's rest is still available. Entering rest means ceasing from self-effort, trusting God's finished work, and walking in obedience, not striving.

Now connect all three verses:

  • Because God's rest still remains (v10),
  • therefore we must be diligent to enter it (v11),
  • for God's Word will judge whether our response is genuine (v12-13).

Why Hebrews 4:12-13 Is a Warning

Hebrews 4:12-13 is not written to impress us with how powerful the Bible is. It is written to warn us that we cannot be careless with it.

We cannot ignore the Word, read it casually, resist it inwardly, or hear it without obedience. The Word will still do its work -- either to lead us into rest or to expose why we refuse it.

"The Word of God is powerful whether I submit to it or not -- but only submission leads to rest."

Application (செயல்படுத்துதல்)

Our responsibility is not to strive harder, but to respond rightly -- to listen, to believe, and to obey. Because God's rest is still open, but His Word will not overlook disobedience.

  • Rest is promised, diligence is required, and the Word will judge my response.
  • Do not just hear the Word -- respond to it with faith and obedience.
  • The Word of God does not fail people; people fail to respond to the Word.
