Introduction (அறிமுகம்)

Paul, writing to the Corinthians -- a church rich in gifts but poor in unity -- reminds them that love is the true measure of spirituality. He says in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 that even the most impressive spiritual acts are meaningless without love.

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing." — 1 Corinthians 13:1-2 (NKJV)

You can speak with power, prophesy with accuracy, give generously, or even die for a cause -- but if love is absent, it profits nothing.

What Love Is Not -- Not Mere Emotion, Words, or Works

Paul lists three examples to show what love is not:

  1. Not words -- "Though I speak with the tongues of men and angels..." Eloquent speech, even heavenly language, is empty noise without love.
  2. Not spiritual power -- "Though I have prophecy and faith to move mountains..." Knowledge and faith can impress, but only love can transform.
  3. Not sacrifice for self-glory -- "Though I give my body to be burned..." Even great sacrifice can be rooted in pride.

It is not what we do that matters most, but why we do it. Everything done without love loses its eternal value.

What Love Is -- The Essence of God's Nature

"He who does not love does not know God, for God is love." — 1 John 4:8 (NKJV)

Love is not one of God's moods or qualities -- it is His very nature. Everything He does -- even judgment -- flows from His love.

To walk in love is to walk in God Himself. To lack love is to misrepresent God, no matter how spiritual we appear.

Think of sunlight. It gives light, warmth, and life -- just as love gives light to faith, warmth to hope, and life to relationships. Remove love, and everything withers.

Why Love Is the Greatest -- Faith and Hope Find Their Fulfilment in Love

"And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." — 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NKJV)

Why is love the greatest?

  1. Faith works through love -- "Faith working through love" (Galatians 5:6). Without love, faith becomes mechanical. Love gives faith its power.
  2. Hope is anchored in love -- We hope in a God who loves us perfectly. Our confidence in the future is built on His love.
  3. Love never ends -- Faith and hope will be fulfilled in eternity, but love continues forever.

Love is not a gift among many -- it is the atmosphere of heaven, the language of eternity, and the true mark of a mature believer.

Application (செயல்படுத்துதல்)

  • Evaluate every action and motive. Ask: "Am I doing this out of love for Christ and others?"
  • Pray before reacting or serving. Invite the Holy Spirit to help you act in love.
  • Start small: speak kindly, forgive quickly, listen patiently, serve humbly.
  • Love is measured not by how much we receive, but by how much we give -- expecting nothing in return.

"Without love, I am nothing." — based on 1 Corinthians 13:2 (NKJV)
